What is a Reddit shadowban?
A shadowban hides everything an account posts from everyone except the account holder — the account can still browse and post normally, with no warning, while its comments and posts are invisible to everyone else. It's Reddit's way of quietly neutralizing spam and abusive accounts without tipping them off.
How does this checker work?
It combines two public signals from Reddit itself: whether the username is registered at all, and whether that account's profile is publicly visible when fetched anonymously. A shadowbanned account is registered but its profile 404s to an anonymous request — that 404 is the shadowban mechanism itself. A suspended account is different: Reddit shows that status openly instead of hiding it.
How accurate is this?
It's a solid signal, not a certainty. Reddit doesn't expose an official "is this account shadowbanned" endpoint, so every third-party checker (this one included) is inferring it from public behavior. The one case this can't fully resolve: a brand-new account with zero activity can look identical to a shadowbanned one from the outside.
What should I do if I'm shadowbanned?
Reddit's own site has an official appeal process for shadowbans — search "reddit shadowban appeal" for the current form. Outside of that, the best prevention is what actually avoids triggering one in the first place: no vote manipulation, no coordinated posting from multiple accounts, and not posting the same link across unrelated subreddits in a short window.
