What a shadowban is
A shadowban hides everything an account posts from everyone except the account holder. The account can still browse and post normally, with no warning — its comments and posts are just invisible to everyone else. It's Reddit's way of quietly neutralizing spam and abusive accounts without tipping them off.
How the check works
Reddit doesn't expose an official "is this shadowbanned" endpoint, so the checker combines two public signals:
- Is the username registered at all — Reddit's own signup-availability check.
- Is that account's profile publicly visible — fetched anonymously. A shadowbanned account is registered but 404s here to everyone but itself; that 404 is the shadowban. A suspended account is different — Reddit shows that status openly instead of hiding it.
It's a solid signal, not a certainty — a brand-new account with zero activity can look identical to a shadowbanned one from the outside.
If you're shadowbanned
Reddit has its own official appeal process — search "reddit shadowban appeal" for the current form. The best prevention is what actually avoids triggering one: no vote manipulation, no coordinated posting from multiple accounts, and not posting the same link across unrelated subreddits in a short window.
